ADHD in Children

There are many disorders and conditions in children that are misunderstood or ignored. This misunderstanding and ignorance led to ruination of many lives. Many children suffered from problems as their disorders were not seen for what they were and not treated or cured on time.

One such condition that was previously misunderstood is Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD). However, now such problems are being addressed and given attention. With awareness and proper ADHD treatments, it is now possible to save precious lives.

ADHD and Children

ADHD in children is a developmental disorder, in which they find it impossible to concentrate their attention to one task for a long period of time. It is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattentions and hyperactivity.

In most of the cases, this disorder occurs in children; however, its incident is also increasing in adults now. Children suffering from ADHD lack the ability to focus on what everyone else is doing, and as a result they are left behind the rest of their peers. Children with ADHD are unable to focus and also disturb others around them.

Due to this reason, ADHD was misdiagnosed by school authorities. They thought of it as some attention seeking trick or prank by the children and failed to realize it as a disorder.
They assumed that these children had learning problems or were mentally handicapped. However, today there are treatments for children suffering from such problems, and teachers are also specialized in dealing with these kinds of students.

ADHD Treatment for Children

There is no medical cure for ADHD. However, with timely intervention and proper treatment, it is possible to control this disorder. The most common and effective treatment includes drugs in form of syrup and tablets that help in controlling symptoms like hyperactivity, forgetfulness, poor impulse control and distractibility.

There are basically different forms of a single drug used to treat ADHD in children, called methylphenidate. There are various types of actions that can be caused by each of the pills.
Among them are Ritalin and Focalin, which have a lasting effect for 3-5 hrs. Ritalin is one of the most commonly used ADHD medicines. There have been some objections to its use by few researchers, but it is still a successful treatment method in most cases.

In addition to short-acting Ritalin, there is Ritalin SR that acts for a period of anywhere between 3-8 hrs. In addition to this, there are also other drugs such as Metadate ER, and Methylin ER, which last for the same period.

In addition to this, there are longer-acting pills as well such as Concerta, Ritalin LA and Metadate CD. These are known to have effects for as many as 8-12 hrs, and can be used just once a day.

Counseling

In addition to these drugs, there are other treatments that are known to be successful. In spite of the success that these drugs had with ADHD children, they should be accompanied by counseling in order to produce better results. Some researchers insist that drugs should not be used because of their possible side effects that may occur in the long run.

They believe that counseling and therapy are best solution to the problem. However, in order to produce the best results in quick time, medication combined with therapy is required.

Teaching ADHD Students

Aside from the medication and therapy that children with ADHD need, other particular steps also need to be taken in order to ease their work. In such conditions, strategies to keep such students away from distraction are implemented.

Children with ADHD are usually kept right in front of the teacher and given shorter tasks to complete. Such tasks are increased in duration with time, in order to help the students pick mental stamina and better focus.
