ADHD - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatments

It is considered safe when one is diagnosed with a particular condition or disorder as opposed to not knowing what problems one suffers from. When one’s symptoms are recognized and they know that they have a particular problem, there is at least a sense of relief that proper treatment can begin. This is opposed to not knowing what ailment one has, as s/he cannot be given any form of treatment unless a problem has been determined or diagnosed.

ADHD Symptoms

One of the most misunderstood conditions that children and adults have is ADHD. This is a condition in which one generally cannot focus on things; attention cannot remain focused on one point and drifts off. In severe cases, a person cannot sit in one place for too long, as they feel the urge to move about. Milder cases have one’s thoughts wandering away.

People often do not see the problem and therefore cannot get any treatment. As opposed to not knowing what ADHD is, awareness of the disorder is around today. Awareness needs to be encouraged and because of this, the treatment of this disorder is spreading now. The methods of treating ADHD are also growing common now and research continues in this area in order to reveal better remedies.

ADHD Diagnosis

In order to diagnose a person with ADHD, one perhaps only needs to observe a case. However, this is done over a particular length of time and other important parts of one’s life are also investigated in order to determine if there are other possible causal factors.

ADHD Treatments

Treatments for ADHD normally encompass better teaching strategies for students, medication such as Ritalin and counseling. Variations of the treatments exist and they are applied according to what a physician sees fit.

Treatment through medication is seen as most effective. It is thought that children respond well to treatment with Ritalin. Ritalin is seen as the most effective form of methylphenidate when it comes to treating children and adults who have ADHD.

In addition to the most common medicine Ritalin, there are other methylphenidates. These include Focalin, Metadate ER, and Methylin ER, Concerta and Metadate CD. Each of these has its merits, but Ritalin is always the preferred type and is widely recommended. All these medications mentioned here have different durations of effectiveness.

Ritalin, as the most common of them, has three types of durations. According to the attention that is desired, Ritalin or one of the other drugs is prescribed.

  • In addition to medication, it must be asserted that counseling is also sometimes recommended. This helps a person deal with his or her problems better.
  • In some particular cases, counseling is necessary in order to motivate the patients. They need to know that they can overcome their problems and be like any other learner or worker.
  • Aside from counseling and medication, in some cases, adjustments are made towards teaching in school. Teachers have to modify their strategies sufficiently in order to encompass ADHD students as well.

Teaching in this manner is known to be successful because students can cope better with their tasks, in terms of the shortened durations. It must be noted that the tasks are not made easier. They are simply modified so that they can be completed in a shorter span of time.

In order to apply these treatment approaches, one should consult a physician, as an expert’s advice is most important for the administering of medication. Finally, it must also be noted that there are no known causes of ADHD. However, it is suggested that one should avoid smoking, taking drugs and having alcohol when they are pregnant.
