Autism in Children

There are many developmental disorders that may occur in children during their developing years. These disorders or conditions may even be difficult to detect because they develop in a child’s growing period. It is only with the passage of time that they are detected when the child does not act normally as his/her peers of the same age group.

Usually, parents are the first ones to suspect when something is wrong. Autism is one such pediatric developmental disorder that develops through childhood and may not be diagnosed until it is quite late.

Diagnosing Symptoms of Autism in Children

People often mistake autism for hearing problem when the child does not respond to call. Thus, if a child displays any symptoms of abnormality and does not respond to his/her name, it should be taken seriously and a specialist should be consulted. It can also be noticed in impaired social interaction, impaired communication and restricted and repetitive interests and activities.

Certain stimulants, such as sounds, lights, and touch will affect autistic children differently than others. However, the degree to which the sensory system is affected can vary from one child to another. Thus, if your child displays any symptoms of abnormality it should be taken seriously and referred to a specialist in case it is autism.

Developmental Stages of Autism

Since Autism develops during the first few years of a child’s life, it is important to take appropriate steps with a child’s specialist. The condition is known to develop within the first 3 years of a child’s life, thus quick action is needed. The child starts showing symptoms of being different from other children in his/her behavior, speech, movement patterns and unusual actions.

Timely intervention is needed to help the child with this problem. If treatment is implemented as soon as autism is detected, the condition can be improved.

It is often argued that autism is a disorder that is very severe and ruins a child’s future life. However, it may be argued that autism is not a disorder; it is a mental condition that can be cured. It is a condition that has to be diagnosed early in developmental stages and treated as soon as possible.

Dealing with Autism in Children

By the time Autism is detected in children, already a significant amount of time is lost. Therefore, no more time should be wasted. The treatment process is quite simple as it consists of basic methods that aim to teach very basic communication methods to children.

Children suffering from autism miss a lot of development and learning as compared to their peers. Thus, they should be trained as well and as much as they can learn to make them as independent members of the society as others.

Autistic children are taught social interaction and relationships. This helps them in their everyday lives as they may have impaired hearing. Learning social skills can help them survive in the society.

The brain of the autistic children is not capable enough to learn things on its own. This condition causes repetitive interests and activities which have to be controlled and replaced by normal activities.

In most of the cases, it has been noted that autism in children occurs in their growing years particularly from the age of 3 and up. During this period, care should be taken and children should be monitored for any abnormality.
