Is Paragard A Safe Birth Control Contraception

Research into contraception through the years has had profound effects on the manner in which people protect themselves from becoming pregnant. Indeed, the birth control methods that were established several years ago have undergone immense improvement.

One example of this improvement in birth control methods is the IUD ‘ParaGard’ that was approved by the FDA in 1984. It has been more than 20 years since then and millions of women around the world rely on ParaGard for effective birth control.

Among all the forms of contraception available, the Intrauterine Device (IUD) is believed to be one of the most effective from almost all angles. The reason being that unlike other forms of contraceptives, the IUD is not composed of chemicals of any kind.

What is ParaGard?

ParaGard is usually a safe T-shaped device made of flexible plastic and copper.

The device is fitted into the uterus and can remain in there for years even up to ten years unless a woman wants it removed to have children. It is recommended that before using an IUD, she should have at least one child, which is a safety measure. In size, the IUD is around 1-1/4 inches in width and 1-3/8 inches in length. By description of size it is one that suits all women and is available all over the world.

The most well known IUD is ‘ParaGard’, and its popularity is due to the fact that it guarantees a 99+% safety against becoming pregnant without the use of harmful chemicals.

Some important aspects of using a ParaGard

  • Since there are no real dangers attached to the IUD one considers it to be safe. However, there are particular aspects of its use that one needs to be aware of. These include problems such as heavy menses in some women.
  • This can be a real cause for worry and often one is put off by the sight of themselves passing more blood than usual.
  • In addition to heavier menses, women may suffer from cramps that are more intense than usual. Also, ‘spotting’ might occur between menstrual cycles and this is a further thing to worry about for some women.

However, experts argue that there is no real reason to worry about bleeding and spotting because it is a common side effect that diminishes after three months or so. Use of IUDs is believed to be a small price to pay in return for the protection against pregnancy for years to come, provided that a woman can go through the initial period.

Advantages of using a ParaGard

  • One of the biggest advantages of using a ParaGard is that if a woman believes that the process is too distressing or painful she can have the ParaGard IUD removed without a problem. This is because it is a small device that is flexible.
  • Indeed, one can have it fitted and removed with considerable ease in a single visit to a physician. Also, if a woman wishes to have more children she may do so by having the IUD removed by her doctor.

A point to be noted is that the IUD may come out of place in some cases if it is not fitted properly; it can even come right out of the uterus and one may have to see a doctor to have it fitted back in. Another thing to keep in mind is that the IUD in some cases may trigger swelling in the uterus because and considerable discomfort. In such a case, some women have it removed and replace it at a later date.

ParaGard and STD

One core negative aspect of the IUD is that it only provides protection against pregnancy, but it does not protect one from sexually transmitted diseases.

Thus, it can be said that ParaGard is a safe form of birth control that is only recommended for women with a single sexual partner. Those who have multiple sex partners are only advised to use the IUD along with other birth control devises like contraceptive sheath to prevent unwanted pregnancy and avoid STD.
