Contraception may be employed for different reasons. These may include:

• The need to prevent a woman from becoming pregnant for the sake of health reasons
• In order to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases also known as (STDs)

Types of Birth Control

The need for use of birth control can be fulfilled from the list of the following birth control methods:

1. The Contraceptive Sheath
2. The Contraceptive Pill
3. The IUD
4. Abstinence, which is hardly ever used in this day and age

The Contraceptive Sheath

The contraceptive sheath is considered to be safe in terms of preventing fluid exchange between partners. The latex material is most suited for this and also helps in preventing fertilization. This contraceptive sheath is also known as condom. The sheath basically serves two purposes:

• It prevents pregnancies
• It prevents the spread of contagious sexual diseases

The Contraceptive Pill

These pills are available from different companies. There are also different types of birth control pills, to be consumed at regular intervals in order to have their intended effects. There have been fears about using the pill because it is said that breast cancer and other forms of cancer could result from prolonged use. However, many people have faith in the pill and use it as their main method of contraception.

The disadvantage of using this form of contraceptive is that it is only prevents one from becoming pregnant. It does not prevent the exchange of fluids through sexual intercourse. Hence, it is not advisable for people who have multiple sex partners. The alternative to this is the use of the contraceptive sheath along with the pill. In this way a person will be safe from becoming pregnant and contracting any sexual disease.

The IUD

This is considered to be another safe means of contraception. It manages to protect one from becoming pregnant through physical means. This is because it is placed in the uterus in order to disturb pregnancy. This method of contraception is based on an ancient method that was employed many years ago.

By placing a coin or small smooth shaped pebble in the uterus, people learned that pregnancies could be prevented. Based on this approach many people relied on it.

However, pregnancies have occurred in rare cases when the IUD was not successful. Therefore in order to be 100% safe one is advised to use another method that would cover whatever chances are left open by the IUD. It is suggested that one should use the sheath, as this would also help protect individuals from the exchange of fluids at the time of sexual intercourse.

This is especially recommended if one has multiple sex partners. However, if one has one partner it is fine if they use the pill for increased protection in addition to the IUD.

Abstinence

This is one of the methods that many people used years ago. However, it is uncommon today because of it unreliability. There is no real way of determining when a woman can or cannot become pregnant.

There are particular days on which it is possible to become pregnant according to experts; these days are likely to move back and fourth in the menstrual cycle. As opposed to this, it is far better to be sure of one’s self and at least use one form of birth control method in order to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
