Living With Breast Cancer
Having any disease
can be hard for anyone. This is because living
with a disease can change a person’s life
significantly. One’s way of life can be
transformed so drastically that it can impact
all those living around him or her. In view of
this, it must be asserted that one needs to take
great care in preserving what is important to
themselves as well as their families. Coping with
a disease like breast cancer is an example of
this.
One needs to take sufficient care of themselves
and also needs to maintain things as they were
before the illness was diagnosed. In asserting
this, it must be emphasized that after a family
member has been diagnosed with an illness such
as breast cancer, people usually begin preparing
themselves for the worst.
Though this is dependent on the stage at which
the cancer may be, it is best to remain optimistic
and go along with whatever is recommend in terms
of treatment. Patients are advised to remain as
calm as possible and attend every session that
is required of them. In doing so, they are able
to maintain a momentum and allow what recommended
treatment they are undergoing to take its proper
course of action. In order to make sure that a
patient attends all sessions regularly without
skipping anything in between the role of the patient’s
family is important. This means that it is automatically
considered their responsibility to make sure the
patient fulfills his or her appointments.
It must be noted that in a situation where a
patient is troublesome, their families are advised
not to make things difficult by fighting with
them. This is because it only adds stress to all
individuals in the family and could worsen the
condition of the patient. In view of this it must
be asserted that the stages at which patients
are play an important role as well. If they happen
to be at a latter stage the more likely they are
to suffer psychologically as well physically.
In situations where things are really difficult
for a family and patient and it has been established
the patient is going to die, even then all individuals
concerned should maintain their cool. This is
because it is pointless making things difficult
when a patient no chances of survival; an environment
should be made as easy as comfortable as possible
for an individual.
In view of a person having good chances of recovery
from breast cancer it must be asserted that they
may pressurize the patient into attending his
or her check-ups regularly. This is because there
are still chances of survival and every measure
must be taken. However, it all must be done tactfully.
This is the best possible way to handle the situation.
It also should be noted that in handling a patient
effectively, the best thing to do is keep them
happy. Though they may be in pain if their mood
is fine a lot can be achieved because they will
co-operate with whatever is asked of them.
As far as the family members are concerned,
whether they are distressed or not it is their
duty to remain calm and supportive to the patient.
If they have not taken up particular roles in
the house before they are advised to do so in
order to make sure that no regular activity or
practice suffers before the patient. Otherwise
the patient will feel that no one will manage
things in her absence. Having said this, it is
important to note that family members need to
show their supportiveness in a caring manner so
that whatever tasks they perform at home in place
of the patient do not appear to be a burden. In
this way, a patient is able to relax a bit and
focus on the treatment that is more important. |
