How Is A Diagnosis Of Cerebral Palsy Conducted
Cerebral
palsy is a medical condition that affects muscular
rigidity and the senses in the human body. This
sickness occurs in young children and new born
babies. There are several reasons for cerebral
palsy, but the major reason is brain damage
to the child during birth. Complications at
birth time also result in cerebral palsy. The
damage to the brain prevents the infant from
having power over muscular actions. Cerebral
palsy also affects the nervous system of the
child and alters the senses that are required
for muscular movements.
The manner in which the diagnosis of
cerebral palsy is conducted is as follow:-
- Diagnosis of cerebral palsy is conducted
by doctors once the child is observed exhibiting
abnormalities during the first few months
of birth; these are usually observed by the
infant’s parents. If the parent suspects
something is wrong with the child and reports
it to the doctor, there are series of tests
done on the child to determine the root cause
of abnormalities and the possible treatment.
- If no known sickness is observed in
a child then there is a strong probability
that the child could be suffering from Cerebral
palsy, which is often very hard to diagnose.
Most doctors do not refer to mental and physical
abnormalities as cerebral palsy, and during
the early stages, it’s mostly not clear
whether the child is suffering form Cerebral
Palsy or if the child is slow in developing
senses. There have been occasions when an
infant has recovered from mental illness and
mental abnormality as it progressed with age.
- Most children that have the inability to
speak or to perform muscular functions during
the early stages of their lives, slowly and
gradually develop such senses with time. Some
children are a little slow to develop as compared
to others. Therefore, it is difficult to determine
whether the lack of development is due to
cerebral palsy or the child is slow in growing.
The diagnosis of cerebral palsy is conducted
by eliminating the other causes of mental
abnormalities, which includes checking for
developmental delays in the child. This helps
in checking for central nervous system failure
and other reasons for physical disabilities.
If no evident reason is observed, the child
is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. There are
many evident symptoms of cerebral palsy, which
include disability of the child to perform
movements, lack of senses, inability to speak,
and shakiness of the body. This sickness also
results in the paralysis of the body.
- The physical activities of the child are
monitored and the manner in which the child
shows lack of muscular abilities is specially
diagnosed. The doctors mostly keep a close
check on the child to determine whether the
brain damage and its effects are persistent
and continual or if the sickness is fleeting
away with time. If the sickness is continual
and the brain injuries are persistent, the
child is said to be suffering from cerebral
palsy. The diagnosis for cerebral palsy is
made after careful observation of the child
and includes several tests, which are carried
out on the infants.
- Doctors make use of X-rays, Brain scans,
MRI and other techniques to determine the
root cause of the mental illness and its severity.
Although these tests do not predict if the
problem is linked with cerebral palsy, they
do help in eliminating other causes of mental
disabilities.
