Prognosis For Children With Cerebral Palsy

Prognosis for children with cerebral palsy is a systematic process, and usually such children are diagnosed with cerebral palsy during the early stages of their lives. There are lots of symptoms that indicate that the child is exhibiting abnormal behavior.

Prognosis of children with cerebral palsy is made on several continuing ill-conditions which include the following

  • The early prognosis for children with cerebral palsy begins when the new born indicates abnormal physical movement and shakiness. The muscular inability of the infant becomes more evident with time. And if the infant is observed carefully the prognosis for children with cerebral palsy can be easily made.
  • Abnormal posture of the child also indicates the probability of cerebral palsy. The prognosis for children with cerebral palsy can be made when they show irregularity in physical positioning of the body and support only specific part of the body.
  • During the first few months of the infant’s life if the baby does not show common reflexes and have inability to sense things then prognosis for children with cerebral palsy can be made after careful examination of the infant by the doctors.

It is very difficult to predict cerebral palsy before the birth of the child, and during the first few months of the infant, it is also difficult to make any prognosis about cerebral palsy. It’s with time that the symptoms of the child help doctors to predict that the child is suffering from Cerebral Palsy.

Most doctors construct a prognosis of cerebral palsy after they are completely sure that a child’s symptoms are totally related to cerebral palsy. There are many other forms of illness that may cause abnormalities, which are quite similar to cerebral palsy. However, the difference between cerebral palsy and other injuries is that the human brain can counter most brain injuries with time, but cerebral palsy has lasting effects on the nervous system, and the child suffering from cerebral palsy may never completely recover from this sickness. In most cases, the accurate prognosis for children with cerebral palsy is only made after carefully observing the child for years and monitoring the physical and mental recovery of the child. The team of doctors evaluates the physical abnormalities of the child and the links of such irregularity with the any brain damage is studied. It is then that the prognosis of cerebral palsy is made.

There are several other types of medical tests, which the doctors implement for the prognosis for children with cerebral palsy. Such types of medical tests include computed tomography. This is a test which helps in locating the undeveloped areas of brain tissues. Another type of test includes MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). The test is used to find those areas of the brain which appear to be damaged.
