Treating Depression in Men
Unfortunately therapy and treatment for depression is often seen as ‘feminine’ by most men. This is because it involves verbalization of emotions and open discussion of problems, both of which are considered a common thing for women. Men generally tend to be less verbal and uncomfortable discussing deep and meaningful relationships.
Most men try to deal with feelings of depression by engaging themselves in different activities. Some compulsively work without taking any breaks, while others turn to alcohol, drugs and further reckless activities as a way of coping with depression. It is important for men to know that if they are depressed they must seek proper treatment and learn to live with their limitations.
Treatment of Depression in Men
Treating depression in men is very necessary and needs urgent attention. Experts believe that men need to realize that it is normal to feel down sometimes and rather than getting drunk or using any other forms of distractions; they need to try and listen to what their emotions are telling them.
Men need to openly and honestly express how they feel, even if it is just with their own partner in the privacy and comfort of their own home. It is important for men who are depressed to talk about what is going on in their lives and be more constructive and less self-destructive.
Most people who undergo treatment for depression go on to lead normal happy lives. With the help of counseling, in conjunction with medication, most men can purge their depression. It is vital for men not to feel isolated. Family members, friends, and co-workers play an important role in recognizing depressive symptoms in men and helping them get treatment.
Types of Treatment for Depression
- Counseling, psychotherapy or support groups.
- Psychotherapeutic work can be on an individual or group basis, allowing people to feel less isolated. By discussing problems with other men, a man can feel less alone.
- Antidepressant medication
- In emergencies, or for some types of depression, Electro-Convulsive Therapy is suggested.
First and foremost, it is important to find the root of depression. Until and unless the main cause of depression is detected, depression cannot be treated. Depression in men can be quite severe and drastic and thus it needs prompt and effective treatment.
Note
If you think you are experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts, it is very important to get help quickly, as most forms of depression can be treated successfully. |
