Importance of Diabetic Diet

In our society, most of the people are unaware of the importance of a nutritional diet while suffering from diabetes.  In this regard, it has been stressed that people suffering from diabetes must be more aware of what they should eat and what they should avoid.

For people suffering from diabetes, a diabetic diet is very important as it can reduce their chances of suffering from the short and long term effects of diabetes.  Also, a diabetic diet is as essential as the diabetic supplies or medicines these patients regularly take to maintain their blood sugar level.

Diabetic Diet

According to a general perception, diabetic diet is considered as ‘a diet that is sugar free’. This is totally wrong. On the contrary, a diabetic diet is one that focuses on the appropriate food substances in the required quantities to suit the needs of a diabetic person.

In many of the cases, this diabetic diet has to be a personalized one, depending on what a physician recommends. This is because every person has a differing insulin level and the action of insulin on each body is individual. One individual cannot have the same glucose level as another and thus cannot have the similar diabetic diet as another. Depending on the insulin in one’s body, food can be used up for energy. Foods that take too long to digest are lessened in quantity in the diabetic diet because of the amount of insulin one has.

Importance of Diabetic Diet

Diabetic diet is very important for diabetic people who have high blood sugar levels. A diabetic diet helps to control their sugar intake and maintain a normal sugar level. This can only be achieved when they will eat a balanced diet that is made up of food stuffs that help the body insulin to utilize the sugar properly without causing any problems.

Some people believe in taking artificial insulin to control their diabetes. Artificial insulin is taken to compensate for low level of insulin in their bodies.

This artificial insulin is also manufactured from various food items and other ingredients for digesting foods that take long to digest. Thus, it can be noted that food and balanced diet can actually help a great deal in curtailing the excess use of artificial insulin and help you overcome your diabetes. Thus the importance of a diabetic diet is apparent. However, it would take individual adjustment to select a diabetic diet and maintain it.

Another important aspect of the diabetic diet is that it aims at controlling one’s sodium level. As opposed to the handiness of the diabetic supplies, a diabetic diet is more capable of controlling the level of sodium by selective processes such as diet.

Proportions of the Diabetic Diet

Each of the food substances has their own unique level of calories and sugar. If there is a shortage of insulin in your body, it will take more time to digest the food. Hence, the calorie consumption will be a long process and cause problems. For this, a proportional diabetic diet with balanced amount of calories and sugar is recommended.

For a diabetic diet food substances should be consumed in the following proportions:

  • 10 to 20 % calories of protein
  • 30% calories from fats
  • The rest (50-60%) of the required calories should come from carbohydrates

The importance of a diabetic diet cannot be ignored. This is because that even if one takes artificial insulin, there is still need for a diabetic diet so that it does not put an excess load on the insulin. Thus, if you consume foods that take long to digest, the body may require more insulin and that is not a good sign.

In view of this, diabetic diet is the best choice as it encourages carbohydrate intake. It is lighter on the insulin you take and also supplies the required dietary fiber. Thus, it saves you from the hardship of taking artificial insulin and helps you keep your diabetes at bay.
