Diabetes Treatment

Diabetes treatment is very important in order to keep the blood glucose level within normal range and to prevent long term complications.  If diabetes is not controlled on time and properly treated it can result in some short term as well as long terms effects such as loss of coordination, frequent urination, weakness and blurred vision.

Diabetes is a disease that requires self care and a willingness to take personal responsibility for its control on daily basis. A diabetic person able to do this can lead a normal life, engage in everyday activities, choose almost any career with a few restrictions and have a happy life and family.

Although diabetes cannot be cured for life, yet it is something that can be managed with proper treatment and self care. Daily treatment must continue throughout a person's lifetime.

Treatment of Diabetes

Treatment of diabetes has improved significantly during the past few decades, especially in terms of self glucose monitoring.

Ask your Dietitian for the Right Foods

Consult a dietitian for the kinds of food that you can eat with diabetes. You can tell the dietitian about the foods you like or dislike so that they can aid you in your diet keeping in mind your choices. Plan your meals and stick to them so that you can help in treatment of your diabetes.

Carbohydrates are good for diabetic people as they provide plenty of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Fresh vegetables and fruit are also a healthy choice. Sugary foods should be avoided and only be taken as treat on special events.

Consult your Doctor for Diet and Medication

The best way of keeping a track on diabetes is to stick to the monitoring application prescribed by the doctor. Keep a strict eye on your diet and speak to your doctor about the medications you can take to help you with it.  Insulin is the most effective medicine for diabetes; however, it should be only taken as recommended by the doctor.

Take care to plan your diet around your medication. If you are taking regular medicines to help you with diabetes, you may be able to take some sugar on daily basis.

Maintain a Balanced Weight

Being overweight is very hazardous for diabetic patients. It is very essential to loose weight while treating diabetes as it can make a big difference in your treatment plan.

Many people are able to eliminate or reduce the amount of medication needed as they can treat their diabetes by eating a balanced diet and maintaining the required weight. If you are overweight, exercise is a good way to shed some extra pounds.

Daily Exercise

Daily Exercise and physical activity are essential and extremely important for a diabetic person. Find a sport or exercise that you enjoy, something that will motivate you to continue it.

Choose a gym close to your home or work and invite some friends to work out with you. It is a good way to spend time with friends as well as lose weight.

Some Other Ways to Treat Diabetes

  • Drink a glass of wine if you enjoy it, but don't overdo it. The American Diabetes Association recommends one alcoholic drink per day for women and two for men.
  • Smoking should also be avoided by diabetics as it paves a hazardous road all the way. It is described as one the most famous self killing ways by continued use. Diabetics have twice the risk of heart disease as the rest of the population and can't afford the extra risk of smoking.
  • Share a dessert rather than eat a whole one yourself.
  • Take your medication as prescribed, whether it is insulin or an oral drug.

With a few restrictions, you can live a normal life with diabetes. Life is a blessing that is bestowed upon us, but we should take care to stay away from things that could be fatal for our health.

For the majority of diabetics, their quality of life depends on how much responsibility they take for their own care.
