With everyone being concerned about their health and fitness, more and more people are becoming health conscious. They are exercising and taking notice of what they are eating and drinking. Due to this awareness, fat-free and low-fats food products have flooded the aisles at grocery stores and supermarkets. Realizing the importance of cutting down on fat, people are avoiding foods that contain fat and other harmful agents.

Cookies, candies, chips, colas, frozen treats and fried foods top the list of fatty foods. Such food items contain lots of fat. However, fat-free foods do not necessarily mean calorie free food. Realizing the importance of calories for body, fat-free foods only cut down on fat but contain the right amount of calories needed by the human body. Cutting down on fat can save you from various diseases like heart problems and blood pressure.

Thus, to remain healthy and fit, it is important to cut down on fat and eat a proper nutritious diet.

Tips to Help You Cut Down on Fat

  • Eat lots of fresh fruits, veggies and whole grains. They all contain minimal amounts of fat and aid in digestion too.
  • Think of meat as a side dish rather than the main course.
  • Bake, broil, steam, roast, poach, stir-fry or microwave food. Avoid fried foods and use cooking techniques that require little or no fat or oil for cooking.
  • Remember to trim the fat off meat before cooking and always drain off excess fat after cooking it.
  • Try eating meals containing pasta, rice, beans and/or vegetables.
  • Chill soups and stews after cooking so as to skim off the fat that rises to the top when it cools.
  • Avoid sautéing foods in oil. Use chicken broth or water instead to cut down on fat.
  • Create low calorie meals by using more vegetables and less meat.
  • Use small amounts of lean meat as lean meat contains low fats and more calories
  • Try to replace red meat with poultry or fish as they contain lesser amounts of fat

These tips will help you plan a diet that is rich in carbohydrates, proteins and minerals but low in fats. Cutting down on fat is important in order to remain fit and avoid problems like cholesterol and high blood pressure.
