The Role Of A Resource Center At Hospitals In Imparting
Health Education
In understanding
the importance of health
education, the one place where patients
and families gather are the various resource
centers placed within the vicinity of hospitals.
These resource centers provide excellent environment
for both patients as well as their families
in receiving needed support, friendly staff
and services to answer all kinds of queries
with respect to the health of their patients
as well as the community. These resource centers
also provide services for patient care, education,
and research for the communities they serve.
The
Importance Of Resource Centers
One such resource center is the 'Robert and
Ronnie Bretholtz Center for Patients and Families
at Brigham and Women's Hospital', duly created
by the Kessler Family Foundation. This model
resource center is duly equipped with a reception
area, a family liaison service, patient and
family relations and a fully equipped library.
The mission of this resource center
is to provide health education, and address
health issues related to the patient as well
as the patient's loved ones. The library alone
serves as a modern resource center as it provides
an updated version of reports and a staff who
can assist both the patient as well as their
families in addressing the various health educational
issues.
It has generally been observed
that whenever a patient is brought to the hospital
by their loved ones, most if not all the patients
including their immediate members of the family
know little about the state of the patient's
health, not withstanding the dilemmas of being
under shock.
Hence, resource
centers such as mentioned above serve to
provide the needed guidance and counseling to
the family members on health issues. They also
serve to provide assurance through sympathetic
and psychological counseling to lessen the shock,
or hearing the tragic news of an ailment/disease
about their patient.
