The
FDA has approved the second oral medication
that will be used for the treatment of erectile
dysfunction in men. Levitra, whose chemical
name is vardenafil, relaxes blood vessels and
muscles in the male sex organ. In this way,
the flow of blood increases in to the male sex
organ that ultimately results in the production
of erection. Millions of men are suffering from
erectile dysfunction in the United States.
The evaluation of Levitra was done in trials that were quite randomized
and placebo-controlled. More than 2,000 men
had participated in those trials. All the men
were suffering from erectile dysfunction. The
erectile dysfunction of men in those two trials
was associated with following radical prostatectomy
for prostate cancer or diabetes mellitus.
A sexual function questionnaire
was used for the assessment of the effectiveness
of the drug, Levitra. Patients were asked about
their ability for the achievement of erection
that is necessary for successful intercourse.
Patients were also asked about the duration
of maintenance of erection so that intercourse
would be complete. It is found from the research
that the ability of patients for the achievement
and maintenance of a penile erection has been
improved by Levitra.
10 mg tablet of Levitra is
recommended to take 60 minutes before getting
involved in sexual activity. Patients that do
not get adequate response from 10 mg table are
then switched to a higher dose of 20 mg. Levitra
is also available in lower doses of 2.5 mg and
5 mg.
