Why Do We Suffer From Nervous Breakdown


Nervous breakdown is used to refer to a condition caused by various emotional disorders which can cause severe life disturbances. It can also happen when people try to bottle up stress and tension and try to let go of it at once. Causes of nervous break down may be related to stress or family problem.

The term nervous breakdown is used to describe a sudden and severe attack of mental illness due to some strain or tension. Nervous breakdown occurs when a person becomes totally unable to deal with what is troubling him and succumbs to the tension. It may be helpful later in making him deal with the issue that lead to breakdown and recover completely.

Some Common Causes Of Nervous Breakdown

Nervous breakdown may be caused due to variety of reasons all leading the individual to think that he has run out of choices and has no where to turn to. They may be

  • Extreme stress
  • Emotional trauma
  • Grief
  • Family problems
  • Severe anxiety
  • Work load
  • It can also be result of Post-trauma stress disorder
  • Use of drugs and alcohol

Symptoms of Nervous Breakdown

  • A person starts hearing, seeing, smelling and feeling things that are not present
  • Getting suicidal
  • Not making sense of what they say or do
  • Inability to cope with things
  • Loss of sense of reality
  • Mood swing and withdrawal from life

Nervous breakdown is also a result of long suffering from neurotic illness such as anxiety and depression of some psychotic illness such as schizophrenia. Breakdowns always take place when the internal interacts with the external that is when the external environment comes in interaction with the inner workings of an individual mind. They may be caused by major problems or setbacks in life. The individuals who are not able to cope with these sudden changes in life suffer from nervous breakdown.

Some Biological Causes For Nervous Breakdown

  • Nervous break down may occur due to inappropriate emotional responses while living in society. Unable to cope with the social life and not developing the right responses to social pressure may lead to nervous breakdown.
  • Lack of sleep, disturbances in the sleeping pattern and frequent changes in sleeping habits may also lead to nervous breakdown.
  • Nervous breakdown may be result of some drugs or medicines that provoke the stimulation of the brain cells and lead to an increase or decrease in the hormonal discharge which may cause problems.

Thus, no specific reason is given that can be held accountable for causing nervous breakdown. However, some of the symptoms given may be common found in people who have suffered from this ailment.
