Obesity Statistics

Health standards in the US are rated as highest in the world. This is due to the importance given to the general health of the public.

However, this emphasis has gone overboard with some people as they take health in terms of eating more. This leads to excessive weight gain and obesity. Obesity refers to the excessive fat accumulated in the body and manner in which they put on weight. However, later they are unable to reduce this weight when needed.

Apart from many other ailments that have been plaguing the US population, obesity ranks on the top. The reason behind this is the fact that children too are not safe from it. To get a clear picture, we have prepared a statistics report to determine the number of people suffering from obesity.

Obesity Statistics

According to latest obesity statistics, there are around 58 million Americans who are overweight and suffering from obesity. Among these are more than 32 million females and 26 million males. In addition to these adults there is the youth that make up around 4.7 million.

More alarming than these figures are the 300,000 annual deaths that occur each year. From this, it is obvious that obesity is a serious issue and needs to be taken very seriously.

Disease Related to Obesity

Obesity has also been related to the following diseases:

  1. Heart conditions
  2. Diabetes
  3. Hypertension
  4. Strokes
  5. Different kinds of cancer

In addition to overweight, there are other factors such as family history of overweight that could easily add to the problem. Also, health issues could make things worse. In fact, if a person already has health problems and then becomes obese, there could be severe consequences.

The statistics of disease related to obesity are as follows:

  1. 80% type II diabetes
  2. 70% cardiovascular disease
  3. 30% gall bladder surgeries
  4. 42% breast and colon cancer diagnosed among obese individuals
  5. 26% obese individuals have hypertension

From these statistics, it can be seen that the situation is severe with many people falling prey to diseases because of obesity.
Whether obesity can really be pinpointed as a major cause of these diseases is another matter. However, it can be asserted that they are in some way related to obesity.

Childhood Obesity Statistics

There are large number of American children who are suffering from obesity and overweight. Many of the school going children suffer from obesity due to overeating and taking in fried and junk food. These childhood obesity statistics are very alarming. It is known that more than 25% white children and 33% of African-American and Hispanic children overweight.

In addition to this, hospital expenses in relation to child obesity have gone up to more than $127 Million.

It is clear from these statistics that obesity is a major problem in the country and requires immediate attention. A child suffering with this condition is facing grave danger and there is a possibility that with growing numbers of such children, the nation has significant number of its youth leading very unhealthy lives.
