Characteristics of Mexican Pharmacies

Rx-Mex is an online Mexican Pharmacy that sells both generic and brand medicines and ensures that both types of medicines being sold are clearly marked. It is reliable and extremely cheap when compared to US and Canadian pharmacies with savings of more than $10-15 per package.

Mexican pharmacies share almost the same common characteristics, as with U.S or Canadian online pharmacies. However there are also some differences. The most common characteristic of a Mexican pharmacy is that they can be split into two classes. Those which sell all kinds of drugs, except controlled substances and those which sell controlled or regulated drugs.

Tarpon, Valium and steroids are all controlled substances, which cannot be brought over the counter without a prescription from a recognized and registered Mexican doctor. Before you buy any medication that is a ‘class II or class III or class IV’ drug from Mexico, it is important that you check with your doctor or pharmacist, as you will also need a prescription to purchases these drugs from Mexico as well.

Drugs that are considered controlled substances are monitored by a Mexican federal agency called Sector Salud. If a druggist is caught selling a controlled medication without a prescription, the Sector Salud can fine them, cancel their business license and even jail them.

Another factor about purchasing drugs from a Mexican pharmacy is that Americans are not allowed to ship their medications over the Mexican border. It is illegal; you have purchase the medication in person and then carry it across the border. Mexican pharmacies sell their drugs at generally lower prices than in the U.S and Americans usually do not require a prescription.

However, the pharmacy industry is considerably less developed in Mexico than say, in Canada; as most Mexican pharmacies do not review your health history, and do not provide good contact information. The contact information provided is usually a U.S address and phone number, as the U.S office acts as a liaison between the consumer and the Mexican pharmacy.

Most Mexican pharmacies sell drugs that are significantly cheaper then in the U.S. Even if you do not have a prescription you can purchase the drugs you are looking for as long as the drug is not a controlled substance. And if you do have a prescription, you can get good quality medicines in Mexico.

However there are some drawbacks to buying prescription drugs in Mexico:

  • In many cases, you do not know where the drugs were made or how they were handled.
  • The directions for use are usually not in English.
  • You must declare the drugs at Customs upon your return to the U.S, as customs permits only reasonable amounts of medication for personal use. If you lie to the customs about having drugs you could go to jail.
  • When buying drugs in Mexico inspect the package to make sure that it is the correct medication.
  • Also inspect the foil wrappers and the expiration date of the drugs you buy. Make sure that the quantity of tablets corresponds with the number posted on the box.

Remember to be smart when purchasing prescription drugs in Mexico. Only purchase drugs that have been prescribed by a doctor. When purchasing drugs in Mexico, make sure you know the exact formula and dosage of the medication you are about to buy, so that you can be certain you are buying the correct product. Do not assume that Mexican pharmacy employees have any medical training, check with your doctor before substituting any other brands of the medication.
