Ortho-McNeil's
Ortho Tri-Cyclen LO (norgestimate/ ethinyl estradiol)
tablets were approved by the FDA for the prevention
of pregnancy in women who elect to use oral
contraceptives.
The medication is also indicated
for women 15 or older with mild to moderate
acne who have reached menstruation and are seeking
contraception, have no known contraindications
to birth control pills, and are unresponsive
to topical acne medication.
The new product provides
a daily 25-µg dose of estrogen for 21
days and 3 different doses of norgestimate (180µg
daily/days 1–7; 215µg daily/days
8–14; and 250µg daily/days 15–21).
Tablets taken for the last
7 days contain no active ingredients.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen (Ortho Pharmaceuticals) is
the first birth control pill to receive FDA
approval for the treatment of acne. The low-dose,
triphasic oral contraceptive contains norgestimate
and ethinyl estradiol and helps clear moderate
acne.

Doctors have indicated that
they will now consider Ortho Tri-Cyclen to treat
acne unresponsive to other conventional therapies
in their female patients who are interested
in using an oral contraceptive for birth control.
They may also switch prescriptions for those
women who are currently using another oral contraceptive.
