Description
Prilosec is sold in the market as delayed-release
(DR) capsules for oral administration only.
Each of these capsules contains either 10 mg
or 20 mg of Omeprazole in the form of enteric-coated
granules. As for its color Omeprazole is a white
to off-white crystalline powder.
Chemistry
The core element in the Prilosec delayed-release medication is a quote “substituted
benzimidazole, 5-methoxy-2-[[(4-methoxy-3, 5-dimethyl-2-pyridinyl)methyl]sulfinyl]-1H-benzimidazole”unquote.
This compound slows down and holds back gastric
acid secretion. Its empirical formula is C17H19N3O3S,
with a molecular weight of 345.42.
Omeprazole melts with decomposition
at about 155°C. It is a weak base, freely
soluble in ethanol and methanol, and slightly
soluble in acetone and isopropanol and very
slightly soluble in water. The stability of
Omeprazole is a function of pH; it is rapidly
degraded in acid media, but has acceptable stability
under alkaline conditions.
When used in the morning the drug
intercepts the production of the enzymes that
stimulate stomach acid production at its peak.
When patients test positive for H. pylori infection,
Prilosec should be given in combination with
Biaxin (clarithromycin) to ensure complete treatment
of the cause of the problem.
