Aging Related Stress Management

Situations or events that seem beyond our control and cannot be avoided lead to stress. Most of the time, stress keeps us on our toes and alerts us to any danger. However, if such situations or events escalate to uncontrollable heights, we feel trapped and unable to handle them.

In this fast growing world, stress has become a common problem and if some means of relieving it are not taken, it can prove harmful.

Aging and Stress

The relation between age and stress is a close one. The term aging refers to organic growth and the process of maturation in human beings. As we grow older, the problems and the worries in life also increase. We tend to take more stress in our old age such as parents worrying for their children, job responsibilities and other issues. However, according to researchers, long term exposure to stress leads to early aging. People who take more stress are liable to feel more tired and sick than people who lead a stress free life.

In other words, unrelenting emotional stress accelerates the process of aging. It may cause:

  • Severe anxiety disorder and depression.
  • Increase the risk of constriction of peripheral blood vessels causing blood pressure leading to heart attack.
  • It can also weaken the immune system thus increasing the risk of various illnesses and diseases.

As people grow old, they take more stress. However, taking stress in progressing years is not good for health. It may lead to certain problems and diseases that have an adverse effect on health. Therefore, it is very important to manage stress and avoid tensions and worries as they serve no purpose except deteriorating health.

Tips for Aging Related Stress Management

As you age, it becomes very important to manage your stress and live a normal life. Some techniques for dealing with stress include:

  • Change your behavior and outlook towards life; you are getting mature, thus your life style should be more relaxing. After a lifetime of hard work you need to lighten up.
  • Think positive and do not let worries occupy your time, do something creative like joining a club or making friends.
  • Eat a good and nutritious diet which will help you fight old age and keep you healthy.
  • Exercise regularly keeping in mind your age and health.
  • Meditation and deep breathing are good ways to reduce stress.
  • New hobbies should be adapted that are filling and satisfying.
  • Self hypnosis is very good to get rid of stress.
  • Volunteering to help others after retirement or on part time basis.
  • Therapeutic use of pets for relieving stress has proved beneficial for many as pets make us feel young and jubilant.
  • Awakening to ones own self and realizing ones perceptions and responses is very helpful in relieving stress. We begin to notice things that we didn’t know about. It opens our mind and makes us see things in a better way.

With progressing age one acquires more worries and stress but a carefully planned lifestyle and control over ones life can go a long way in managing stress. Along with this, adopting hobbies that are fulfilling and satisfying help a great deal in coping with stress.
