Stress is caused by events or situations that seem beyond our control and cannot be avoided. In normal situations, stress keeps us on our toes ready to combat danger. However, if stress escalates too high, we feel trapped and unable to cope.
It has been noticed that women take more stress and get disturbed on even insignificant things more often as compared to men. In homes they are the ones who take care of most of the things, look after children and perform daily chores. In all this, they come across certain stress causing incidents. As a result, they become over emotional, sentimental and disturbed; if such situations are not rectified on time; they lead to further mental as well as psychical problems.
Common Causes of Stress in Women
Stress can be brought on by a variety of reasons. They may be:
- Traumatic accident
- Death of a loved one
- Effect of serious illness or disease
- Stress of work
- Family tension
- Marriage problems such as divorce
Psychological Effects of Stress on Women’s Health
Being sensitive, women are take stress but they do not get proper guidance on how to handle stress and this leads to health problems and other complications. Stress might lead to some of these problems.
- Too much stress produces hyperactivity in hypothamlus-pituitary-adrenal axis and disturbs normal level of serotonin, the nerve chemical for feeling normal
- Stress also reduces ones ability to live a happy life of pleasure and satisfaction
- Stress may lead to isolation and danger of self harm
- It may lead to headaches as well as stomach upsets
- Too much anxiety and anger lead to strained relationships
Other Health Problems Caused by Stress in Women
- Exposure to a stressful or terrifying event can lead to Post-traumatic stress disorder. People with PTSD repeatedly re-experience the ordeal in form of flash backs and memories. PTSD can cause depression, sleep disturbances, emotional numbness and guilt in some cases.
- High blood pressure as well as danger of heart stroke
- Stress on regular basis can also be an agent for irritating and triggering ulcers. It may be caused by improper digestion and lack of proper diet due to stress.
- Women who are breast feeding their children may have less milk to feed. Due to tension, the milk starts to get into lumps leading to other problems.
- In some cases, it may lead to weight loss, while in others it may cause weight gain. Disturbed eating habits may result in either of these.
- Too much stress can lead to decline in sperm production and infertility.
- Too much stress can lead to drug or alcohol dependence and cause further complications such as isolation from loved ones and distortion of physical health.
- Too much stress can also result in loss of pregnancy or miscarriage.
Too much stress can always lead to complications. It is better to finds ways either to find a way to relieve it or to get it over with. Women are not only working out side the homes but they also contribute a lot towards their families and undue stress can have a harmful result on their lives. |
