To maintain proper health, you need to eat the right kinds of foods that provide you with all the necessary proteins, vitamins and minerals. By right kind of foods we mean a balanced diet that contains a proportion of all the important nutrients. However, it is not always possible to get exactly the right nutrients like vitamins and proteins in your diet. To compensate this need, we are prescribed vitamin and mineral supplements depending on our need for them.

It is necessary to take these vitamin supplements as lack of these vitamins in the body may cause some problem.

Importance of Vitamin Supplements

Most of us might not be aware of the fact that a large number of health problems occur due to lack of vitamins in our body. In most of the cases, we try to take a balanced diet to make up for the amount of vitamins needed by our body but it is not possible. In such cases, vitamin supplements are very important. They ensure that we get the required amount of vitamins as needed by us to function properly.

Vitamin supplements are important for regularization of different body processes and building immunity in our body. Lack of vitamins can decrease immunity that makes body vulnerable to diseases and illnesses.   Thus, vitamins help us not only to prevent diseases and problems but also strengthen our body to fight them.

Types of Vitamin Supplements

To make up for various deficiencies in the body and to provide immunity against diseases that occur due to lack of any particular vitamin, there are various types of vitamin supplements available. These different types of vitamin supplements help people to take only the vitamin they need and make up for their deficiency.

The production of vitamin supplements is now well known and vitamin supplements are easily available in the market, drug stores and super markets. They can be obtained without any written prescription from the pharmacy too. Mainly they are taken to cover the area of deficiency on one’s diet.

All these vitamin supplements have their own advantages and serve a purpose. Each of them has to be taken in accordance to their need.

Vitamin A Supplements

Vitamin A supplements are essential for normal vision; prevent night blindness and inflammation or dryness of the eyes. Vitamin A supplements can be purchased either from the pharmacy or any drug store. They are available in form of pills as well as syrup. However, it is recommended that you consult your doctor regarding the dosage and use of these supplements.

Many functions of vitamin A and D are common and these two nutrients exist together in many of the food substances.

Vitamin B Supplements

Lack of meat in your diet can cause deficiency of vitamin B. Vitamin B is further divided in vitamin B1, B2, B6 and B12. Most of these different forms of vitamin B are available in other foods, but B12 is not found in plant food. Thus, if you are a vegetarian, you should take vitamin B12 supplements.
 

  • Vitamin B1 is needed to prevent beriberi, maintain a healthy appetite and body growth.
  • Vitamin B2 supplements help prevent skin lesions and weight loss.
  • Vitamin B6 supplements are essential for metabolism of amino acids and starch in the body.
  • Vitamin B12 supplements help to keep anemia at bay and help in production of red blood cells which is very important for health.

Vitamin C Supplements

Vitamin C is very important to prevent a disease known as scurvy. Vitamin C is mostly found in citrus fruits like oranges, grape fruits, lemons and numerous vegetables.  Vitamin C supplements provide the body with important nutrients that help body to build up immunity and protect it from various diseases. It also helps to make teeth and bones strong. For this reason it is also available with calcium and phosphorus.

Vitamin C supplements are available in form of syrup and pills as well as chewable tablets that are good to taste. They can be taken by children and adults alike.

Vitamin E Supplements

Available inform of pills or tablets, vitamin E is known to reduce the risks of heart attacks. Also, vitamin E is an anti-oxidant and prevents cancer too. Some supplements of vitamin E also consist of vitamin C, E, and beta carotene.  Being anti-oxidants, all these nutrients combine together and help fight cancer.

Vitamin supplements are very helpful for the proper growth and nourishments of the body only when taken as required. It is recommended that you consult your doctor if you feel you need any vitamin supplements so that you only take the required vitamins. Excessive vitamin supplements are not healthy and cause adverse effects.

In addition to different types of vitamin supplements, there are other substances like zinc, calcium, iron and other minerals also needed by body for healthy functioning.
